EXPLORATION GEOSCIENTIST

LOCATION: Office-based, Lagos , Port Harcourt, Nigeria

The company’s operations are concentrated in the Niger Delta and adjoining shallow offshore areas where it operates in an oil mining lease area of around 31,000 square kilometres.

SPDC has more than 6,000 kilometres of pipelines and flow lines, 87 flow stations, 8 gas plants and more than 1,000 producing wells. The company employs more than 4,500 people directly of whom 95 per cent are Nigerians. Some 66 per cent of the Nigerian staff members are from the Niger Delta. Another 20,000 people are employed indirectly through the network of companies that provide supplies and services

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and maintain regional geological models for petroleum systems and propose data purchase or studies to test these concepts.
- Compile relevant data,identifying critical information that impact assessments.
- Evaluate and integrate all relevant data in order to make a technically sound assessment of the prospectivity of basins,plays and prospects using play-based exploration principles.
- Conduct regional 3D and 2D seismic data interpretations,including well-seismic correlation,depth conversion,visualisation,and data management.
- Integrate subsurface well data into regional and prospect-specific seismic interpretation,including facies interpretations,geological controls on reservoir distribution,petrophysics etc.
- Mature and assess the potential of identified prospects,generating well proposals where justified.
- Participate in acreage evaluations.
- Seek timely integration of required contributions from specialists together with own expertise. Ensure cross-discipline integration with PE and geophysical inputs.
- Conduct or direct specialist geological and geochemical studies and integrate potential fields data (gravity,magnetics).
- Utilise GIS for mapping and maintain appropriate data management procedures for archiving and retrieval.
- Assess regional and prospect risks and uncertainties.
- Technical Coach and mentor younger less experienced geologists and other staff,as needed.

The successful candidate(s) will work as part of an integrated team.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Experienced E&P professional, preferably including operational experience.
- Advanced degree in geology or other geosciences discipline required (Masters or higher).
- Strong technical and analytical skills with subsurface experience and proven track record in a variety of stratigraphic and structural settings.
- Thorough understanding of prospect maturation/appraisal and early exploration phase data acquisition requirements and associated operations.
- Workstation skills and ability to provide quality interpretations (2D and 3D) and data interpretations leading to the generation of well proposals and acreage acquisition/divestment.
- An in-depth knowledge of depositional systems and sequence stratigraphic principles.
- Ability to network and collaborate with subsurface (RE, PT, geochem, basin modeling, WE), surface (facilities-cost engineering) and other non-technical disciplines.|
- Ability and confidence to work and think independently, including outside areas of core competence, while contributing as team player.
- Strong HSE awareness.
- Willingness to challenge dogma.

Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) is the pioneer and leader of the petroleum industry in Nigeria. It has the largest acreage in the country from which it produces some 43 per cent of the nation’s oil. The company’s operations are concentrated in the Niger Delta and adjoining shallow offshore areas where it operates in an oil mining lease area of around 31,000 square kilometers.

SPDC is currently involved in a multi-million dollar oil and gas project in the Niger Delta region with the objective of increasing production to help meet the world’s growing demand for energy.

We’re currently looking to recruit Planning Engineers for our Port Harcourt business.
Responsibilities:
1. Develop detailed overview of the respective Project schedules (for; opportunity maturation – Project Define phase,project execution phase – construction activities,project life cycle – operational and abandonment activities and review of third party schedules – NOV) to provide assurance that the schedules provided have been prepared with consistency and reflection of reality & PG 3B requirement.
2. Provide planning & scheduling expertise,procedures and review capabilities,including scheduling and risk analyses and ensure that resources are available to sufficiently support the requirements of Engineering & Major Projects teams.
3. Formulate planning & scheduling review strategies for project teams in line with approved guidelines to ensure project plans conform to Group standards. Also,assure on a continuous basis that guidance is followed,initiate corrective action if necessary.
4. Assist the Head of Planning in Training and coach Planning Engineers in SPDC to acquire required competency levels for their various jobs and also deliver planning related inputs to courses,workshops,conferences,etc.
5. Provide specific ad-hoc planning support to the project teams as required in order to meet project review requirements.
6. Participate in project planning audits / reviews,and QRAs during concept development,conceptual and detailed design basis. Participate in VARs,ESARs,peer assists and technical challenge sessions to ensure consistent application of SPDC Planning Engineering standards.
7. Participate in performing internal and external benchmarking (i.e. against historical performance,industry norms and established KPIs) to improve and optimize project plans within the new ‘must win’ initiative on project delivery.
8. Develop own skills and competence in line with changing business needs and technical advances in Planning & Scheduling and
keep abreast of new developments,both within Shell,international professional bodies and other industries.

Requirements:
A university degree in Engineering or Science, with a minimum of 10 years of experience in the E&P business, preferably in a project environment. A very good planner with many years hands-on professional planning experiences within project planning and controls environment, preferably in a difficult working environment. Experience with development and implementation of project management processes like schedule and resource.
Skilled Primavera practitioner, particularly in P3e & Knowledge of Pertmaster Risk Expert & on Shell enterprise management tool (SAP). A very good inter-personal and leadership skills.
Good communications skills (i.e. report writing and presentation) are essential.
